Having watched the finale to Season 5, I reconsider my theory about a LOST Holy Trinity. I previously believed that Jacob, the Island, and the smoke monster were tied together by some type of spiritual link. I now wonder how plausible it is considering the smoke monster ordered Ben to follow Locke's command. If the smoke monster was aware of the fact that "Locke" was Jacob's rival in disguise or if it at least had the prescience to know that "Locke" would have Ben kill Jacob (he's most likely dead seeing as though Ben stabbed him and "John" kicked him into a fire but it's the island, he's Jacob, and it's LOST - who knows what happened?) then it would most likely not have any direct association with Jacob; a second option is that Jacob and the smoke monster are linked and Jacob needed Ben to kill him as part of some greater plan that we cannot foresee; or alternatively, the smoke monster has a mind of its own and it does whatever it wants.
A couple of things to consider:
- As far as we can tell Richard is on Jacob's side. He has been watching Locke since he was born because he's "special."
- Jacob may or may not have "breathed" life back into Locke after his father pushed him out of an eighth-story window. It appears that after waiting for John to plummet to the ground, Jacob walks to him and firmly grasps Locke's shoulder for a second or two, causing him to return to a conscious state. Reassuringly, he tells John that everything will be alright - probably because he knows he has partially healed John and will do so completely when he crashes on the island.
- "Locke" seemed surprised when Ben told him the smoke monster "threatened to destroy [him] if [he] didn't do everything [John] said." He took elation in the discovery that Ben was willing to do whatever he desired; he wouldn't have to convince Ben to kill Jacob.
Based on what we know it seems unlikely that the smoke monster is an extension of Jacob or that they are interrelated by some other means. Then again, this is LOST; when does what we know ever count for much?
