Locke must kill Jacob

The shocking conclusion to "Follow the Leader" closed with Locke leading the Others to Jacob to finally see and kill him. Naturally, Richard and Ben are concerned because they've always known Jacob as the supreme leader of the Others and the island. Locke, who is Jacob's number two and supposedly taking orders from him (or the island - same thing), now intends to kill Jacob. Why would Jacob ever ask Locke to kill him?
This is a great question, the answer to which Ben should not currently concern himself with. While we would all like to know the answer (and hopefully will find it out today), the last time we explicitly heard the will of the island, the smoke monster ordered Ben to follow Locke's command. No matter how controversial the matter, Ben must help John fulfill whatever he sets out to do. Now, it means killing Jacob.
