Jack Loves His Daddy
From nearly the beginning of the series we have known Jack has/had problems with his father (episode 1x11 is called "All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues" - it's the episode where Jack reports his father for drinking on the job). He resents his father for his drinking, the lack of affection and approval he shows, his infidelity, and the number of other reasons that make him worst father of the year. Despite the ill will he bears for Christian, he often recounts the moment when he recovered from crippling panic during a surgical procedure. He accidentally cut the patient's dural sac, causing cerebrospinal fluid to spill out which could have then left the patient paralyzed. Present for the surgery, Christian told Jack to not be afraid, close his eyes, count to 5, and fix the patient. Jack followed his advice and went on to successfully close the patient without getting sued for malpractice. Although Jack left the surgery feeling humiliated in front of his surgical team, he nevertheless shares this story with Kate to help her overcome the fear she faces when Jack asks her to sew his wound shut in the series pilot. He carries Christian's advice with him to help himself and others through the most challenging moments.
