When Locke asks Ben what happened when they first went to see Jacob together, Ben provides what may be the only honest, indisputably genuine response we'll ever see from him. He admits to faking the entire experience before the furniture began flying around the room. He lied because he was too embarrassed to admit he had never seen or heard Jacob.
Even though Ben will probably continue to be a conniving little weasel, I can't help but feel some compassion for him. Since preparing for his judgment, we have seen a more relatable Ben. He's not just a cold, calculating, menace; he has weaknesses, fears, emotions. I can almost see Ben becoming one of the good guys, using his powers of deceit and manipulation to better everyone, but it's so hard to tell who's good or where Ben's allegiance currently lies - with whomever is posing as Locke; with Jacob if he gets over his grudge; with the island, regardless of whether or not it's tied to Jacob; or with whomever seems most likely to save his ass and have the right answers when shit hits the fan. Whatever he decides, I'm fascinated with Ben as a character.
